Eco-Friendly Excursions in Tenerife: How to Choose Well
Why this matters more here than almost anywhere
The strait between Tenerife and La Gomera holds one of Europe’s only resident populations of pilot whales: they live here year-round, raise calves here, and sleep on the surface here. That makes the south coast one of the world’s great whale-watching areas, and also one of the easiest places to do it badly. The difference is the boat you choose.
What the flags and acronyms actually mean
Blue Boat / Barco Azul: the official government charter for whale-watching vessels. It commits the skipper to approach limits, engine rules and time limits near the animals. If a boat does not display it, that tells you something.
World Cetacean Alliance (WCA): the south coast is a certified Whale Heritage Site, and WCA partner operators are audited on how they behave around the animals, not just what their brochure says.
Our eco catamaran carries both, keeps the engines low near the pods, and adds something better than a certificate: underwater microphones. When you hear the whales talking below the hull, nobody on board needs to be told why the boat keeps its distance.
Low-impact ways into the island’s best moments
By paddle: our kayak routes from Palm-Mar and Los Cristianos put you at water level in a turtle habitat, with no engine at all. Groups are small and briefed on distance; the turtles decide how close the encounter gets.
By starlight: Teide National Park is a certified dark-sky destination. A stargazing evening consumes nothing but a clear night, and the astronomy guides are among the island’s most passionate conservationists.
On the volcano: pick guided routes that stay on established trails. The high-altitude ecosystem regrows over decades, not seasons; a guide who explains that is a guide worth paying for.
The simplest test
Ask one question before you book any sea trip: “How close do you go to the whales?” The right answer talks about regulations and letting the animals choose. The wrong answer promises you selfies. Book accordingly.
